DVSA driving test swap update for learner drivers from 12 May 2026.

DVSA Driving Test Swap Update 2026: Why This Matters

The DVSA driving test swap update 2026 is important news for learner drivers across England, Scotland and Wales. From 12 May 2026, DVSA says learner drivers may be able to swap their car driving test with another learner driver, as long as both learners already have a test booked and both want each other’s exact test slot.

This could help learners who have booked a test but later realise the date does not suit their progress, confidence, instructor availability or personal schedule. It may also help another learner who feels ready sooner and wants a date that better matches their test readiness.

However, this is not the same as changing your test online or searching for a cancellation. A driving test swap means two learners exchange existing bookings with each other. The swap must match the exact date, time and test centre already booked.

For learners with Nationwide Driving School, this update is useful because it gives more flexibility, but it also needs careful planning. A closer test date is only helpful if your driving is safe, independent and test-ready.

What Is a Driving Test Swap?

A driving test swap is when two learner drivers exchange booked test slots.

For example, one learner may have a test booked for June but feel unprepared. Another learner may have a later test in August but feel ready sooner. If both learners agree and both bookings meet DVSA rules, the test slots may be swapped by phone through DVSA.

This update could be useful, but learners should not rush into a test just because an earlier date becomes available. Passing the driving test depends on consistent safe driving, good judgement, awareness, confidence and the ability to handle real traffic situations without relying too much on help.

Before agreeing to swap, it is sensible to speak to your instructor and ask whether your driving standard is ready for the new date.

You can also prepare properly by booking extra support through our driving lesson and intensive course booking page.

Who Can Swap a Driving Test?

From 12 May 2026, DVSA says you can only swap your own car driving test with another learner driver. Both learners must already have a test booked. Both learners must want each other’s exact test date, time and test centre.

DVSA also makes it clear that other people, including driving instructors and websites, cannot swap a driving test for someone else. This is an important safety point. Learners should avoid unofficial websites, social media sellers or anyone offering to manage swaps in exchange for money.

At Nationwide Driving School, our advice is simple: always follow the official DVSA process and never share sensitive personal details with another learner, a stranger online, or an unofficial service.

Key DVSA Rules Learners Must Check First

Before trying to swap, both learners must check the rules carefully.

Both learners must have at least one of their two allowed test changes left. DVSA says a driving test swap counts as one of the two changes allowed on a test booking. If either learner has already used both changes, the swap cannot go ahead.

The swap request must also be made at least 10 full working days before the earliest test date. DVSA counts Monday to Saturday as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not count.

Both learners must also have the same type of test booking. A weekday test can only be swapped with another weekday test. An evening, weekend or bank holiday test can only be swapped with the same type of booking. Tests with extra time for a disability, health condition or learning difficulty can only be swapped with the same type of booking.

This helps keep the process fair and avoids learners swapping bookings that do not match properly.

Important Location Rule From 9 June 2026

There is also an important location rule.

Before 9 June 2026, DVSA says a learner can swap with another learner booked at any driving test centre. From 9 June 2026, the rule becomes stricter. A learner can only swap with someone whose test is booked at the same test centre, one of the three nearest test centres, or the test centre first booked at.

This matters for learners in areas such as Burton upon Trent, Derby, Leicester, Lichfield, Swadlincote, Uttoxeter and Sutton Coldfield. Test centres can have different waiting times, different local routes and different traffic conditions. A learner who has trained around one area should think carefully before accepting a test at a centre with unfamiliar roads.

If you are unsure whether a new test centre is suitable, speak to your instructor before agreeing to the swap.

Speak to Your Driving Instructor Before Swapping

Before calling DVSA, both learners should check that the driving instructor is available for the new date, time and test centre. DVSA also advises learners to check that the instructor agrees the learner will be ready for the test date being swapped to.

This is very important. Your instructor may already have another lesson or driving test booked at that time. Your instructor may also feel that the new date is too soon, especially if you still need work on junctions, roundabouts, manoeuvring, meeting traffic, independent driving or dual carriageways.

A driving test date should match your ability, not just your excitement.

If you need extra preparation, our block booking driving lesson discounts can help you plan more lessons before your test.

How Do You Swap a Driving Test?

DVSA says driving test swaps can only be done by phone. You cannot swap online, by email, by webchat, by text message, through WhatsApp, or through DVSA social media accounts.

Both learners must be available at the same time. The learners do not need to be together because DVSA will call the other learner using the phone number recorded on that learner’s booking.

The learner calling DVSA will need their own driving licence number, their own driving test booking reference number, the other learner’s booking reference number, details about any previous driving tests, and payment card details used to book the test if required.

DVSA says it will never ask for the full payment card number or security code to complete a swap.

Keep Your Personal Details Safe

This update is useful, but learners must be careful with personal information.

DVSA advises learners not to give another learner their driving licence number, theory test pass certificate number, address, phone number, email address or payment card details. The person calling DVSA only needs the other learner’s driving test booking reference number.

Be careful with social media groups or online posts offering test swaps. If someone asks for too much information, payment card details, licence details or login access, avoid it.

Learners should use official GOV.UK services where possible. You can read the official DVSA driving test swap guidance for the full update.

What Happens During the DVSA Call?

One learner calls DVSA and asks to swap the driving test. DVSA completes security checks with the learner who called. That learner must confirm agreement to the swap.

The caller then gives DVSA the other learner’s booking reference number. DVSA will not ask for the other learner’s name or contact details.

DVSA then places the first learner on hold and calls the other learner using the phone number already saved on the booking system. DVSA will not accept a different number from the first caller.

The second learner must answer, pass security checks, agree to the legal declaration and confirm agreement to the swap. If everything is correct, DVSA completes the swap.

If the other learner does not answer, fails security checks, does not agree, or has used both allowed changes, the swap will not go ahead.

What Happens After the Swap?

Once the swap is completed, each learner gets the other learner’s original test date, time and test centre.

Both booking records are updated, but DVSA says learners will not receive an immediate email confirmation. The next reminder email from DVSA should show the new details.

Your booking reference number stays the same. Your payment details stay the same. Any special requirements already added to your booking also stay the same.

After the call, write down the new test date, time and test centre straight away.

Should You Swap Your Driving Test?

A test swap can be helpful, but it is not always the best choice.

You should only consider swapping if you are genuinely ready, your instructor agrees, your instructor is available, the location works for your training, and the new test date gives you enough time to prepare properly.

A driving test is not just about getting an earlier date. It is about showing safe, independent driving on real roads. A learner who takes the test too early may fail and then face another long wait for a new booking.

If you are nervous, close to test standard or returning after a break, our beginner driving lesson offers and refresher lesson options can help you build confidence before test day.

How This DVSA Update Helps Learners

This update may help reduce pressure for some learners. Someone who needs more time may be able to move to a later date by swapping with someone ready sooner. Someone who is already test-ready may get a more suitable date without relying only on cancellation searches.

It also gives learners more control, but only when done through the proper DVSA phone process.

For driving schools, this update gives instructors another way to help pupils plan around readiness, availability and lesson progress. However, instructors cannot complete the swap for learners. The learner must deal directly with DVSA.
